I find it difficult to slow down in this fast pace life. Mostly for accountability, but also for inspiration I've started this series of posts called self-love Sunday. Ideally we should be doing things all day everyday to promote self-love. I know for me, I'm not the best at carving out time for myself, I always fill any bit of space I do have with tasks that have been thrown on the back burner. 

 

This week I've spend my Sunday cooking an Italian vegetable soup and baking cinnamon buns. I'm also indulging in this creepy, yet very satisfying face mask, paired with this lush galactica bath bomb. I love creating a spa like atmosphere in my bathroom, so I listen to tibetan singing bowls, light candles, and turn out the light. This really helps me fully relax and get out of my head. 

 

I love doing a 31 minute mediation on Sundays, tonight I'm doing Kirtan Kriya. Whatever you need at that moment, it will re-adjust and align you to bring balance into your mind and thus your life. I find my heart and soul needs nothing more than just quiet time to come back to everything that is important, no matter what is going on in my life. Self-love shouldn't just fall on a Sunday, but its nice to spend the day being kind to yourself and making space in your day to spend some quality time satisfying your needs.

Mediation for Anxiety

Mediation for Anxiety

The past couple days I've been waking up with anxiety, which hasn't happened for about a year. It's super easy to get trapped in an endless cycle of anxiety when it starts, I find my mind goes back into the same thought patterns and its challenging to stop the cycle. Wearing white uplifts the spirit and expands the aura, which helps put me in a more positive, bright mood. When wearing white isn't enough, mediation diffuses the anxiety. The simple act of connecting back to my breath seems to do the trick, it allows me to breathe into something greater than me and puts everything back into perspective. I thought I would share a beautiful meditation that calms my nerves and soothes my anxiety. I hope it helps. 

 

 

 

 

 

Sit in easy pose with your spine straight and your chin slightly tucked.

Place your hands on your knees with your palms facing up.

Close your eyes and imagine that you are gazing at the space between your eyebrows.

Inhale and chant "sa" while touching your thumbs and index fingers together, "ta" while touching your thumbs and middle fingers, "na" while touching your thumbs and ring fingers and "ma" while touching your thumbs and pinkies.

The four syllables should be sung to the tune of the "Mary had a" portion of the song "Mary Had a Little Lamb." While practicing, visualize each sound coming down through the crown of your head, then leaving between the eyebrows.

The words of the chant are "sa ta na ma," meaning "infinity, life, death and resurrection." The mudras (hand positions) performed also have spiritual significance, relating to knowledge, wisdom, energy and communication. 

Practice this mediation for 11-31 minutes for 40 days to feel the full effects.

Why Kundalini?

Let's start with what Kundalini yoga is. Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is called the yoga of awareness. You start a class by tuning in with mantra and then move into a pranayam, followed by a Kriya. A Kriya is a sequence of Asanas or postures set up in a particular way to move the flow of energy around your body. There is a Kriya for everything. After the Kriya you move into a meditation, sometimes with mantra, sometimes without mantra. The Kriya that you went through prepared your body for the meditation, and just like there is a Kriya for everything there is also a meditation for everything.

 

For me I find Kundalini yoga to be a lot more strict then other types of yoga, and for me I found it to be the most life changing. I believe that when your energy within your body becomes stagnant it can cause the world around you, your own reality to feel stuck, to feel burdensome, and to feel uncomfortable. With that being said, that is why I think Kundalini yoga is so effective. It's taking something that you have never done and making you do it for uncomfortably long periods of time. That moves the energy and changes patterns or habits.

I also love Kundalini for the sound, for the mantra. Nothing centres my being more then long chant. I feel myself become apart of that which creates worlds when I chant, the sound cuts through my ego, I can only hear and sense my soul. There are 84 meridian points on the upper pallet of the mouth. As you stimulate each meridian point, it sends signals to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus programs the chemicals that go into your brain. It is connected to the pituitary gland by blood vessels and regulates moods, emotional behavior, sexuality and even physical things like hunger and sleep. It's pretty scientific, but I can assure you it feels amazing.

“Every element of the universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested to us as light, sound and energy. The human sense perceive only a fraction of the infinite range of vibration, so it is difficult to comprehened that the Word mentioned in the bible is actually the totality of vibration which underlies and sustains all creation. A person can tune his or her own consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra. By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration. It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument. In other words, as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.” ~Yogi Bhajan

 So if you are asking the question why would I try a kundalini class, my answer is why not, go to a class and test it out. Judge how you feel, maybe not in the moment but after the class. There are so many benefits to doing yoga that it doesn't hurt to try.
